Symptoms that should be assessed

  • Sudden or persistent testicular pain
  • Swelling or enlargement
  • A new lump or change in shape/feel
  • Pain associated with nausea or abdominal discomfort

Urgent warning sign

Sudden severe testicular pain, especially with nausea/vomiting or abdominal pain, can be a sign of testicular torsion and requires emergency assessment.

Possible causes

Causes can include infection, injury, hernia, cysts, varicocele and testicular torsion. A new lump can also require evaluation for more serious conditions.

Do not self-diagnose

Because different conditions can look similar, a physical examination and sometimes ultrasound or other tests may be needed.

When to arrange a consultation

A persistent ache, swelling, a new lump or a change in size/shape should be assessed even if the pain is mild.
